Northwest Forest Soils Council Winter Newsletter Winter 2000-2001

Greetings!

This is my final newsletter as president of NWFSC. At the end of the winter meeting, Tom Terry of Weyerhaeuser Co. will be taking over the gavel. This means that we will be holding elections during the winter meeting to choose a new President and Secretary to serve in the years 2003-2005. Continuing to repeat our usual cycle of government, university, and industry, this means that we will be electing someone as President from the government sector. If you would like to be nominated for President, or would like to nominate someone else for President, please email me at: zabow@u.washington.edu

This years winter meeting will be held in a new location--Bellingham. With 2001, we begin a three-way rotation between Portland, Federal Way, and Bellingham for the site of our winter meeting. Peter Homann is serving as the site coordinator. The meeting this year will focus on 'Forest Management and Soil Organisms' and Robert Edmonds has agreed to moderate the session. With the current interest in organism functions, diversity, habitat, endangered species, and questions about how essential some organisms are to ecosystem functioning, it seems like a very topical subject. Some great speakers have been lined up. We'll also continue with the poster session on current research on soils in the northwest. Again, graduate students are particularly encouraged to present their research in posters. There is limited wall space for posters, so it would be appreciated if poster presenters can bring their posters with a hard backing to sit on an easel.

At our last couple of meetings, we have discussed producing a revised version of 'Forest Soils of the Douglas-fir Region'. During the business meeting at the summer field trip, the decision was made to proceed with a symposium and a revised version of FSDFR. The organizing committee has now set up and will hold their first meeting on January 25th, the before the winter meeting. Members of the committee include: Jim Boyle (OSU), Mike Curran (MoF), John Depuy (BLM), Rob Harrison (UW), Ron Heninger (Weyerhaeuser), Steve Howes (USFS), Gordon Weetman (UBC), and Darlene Zabowski (UW). We will provide everyone with an update of discussions at the winter meeting.

Other items to report on concern the state soil and the 2001 summer field trip. A letter of support for the forest soil, the Tokul Series was sent to WSPSS and the appropriate state legislators. This followed the decision at the summer meeting to support the WSPSS efforts to acquire a state soil. In addition, plans are proceeding for the 2001 summer field trip to Fairbanks Alaska. Tentative dates for the field trip are July 9 - 11th. We hope to have more information at the winter meeting.

Our plan at this time is to switch the mailing of newsletters to entirely email in 2001. This will also require setting up a website to ensure access to newletters and minutes. Rob Harrison has set up a website for the NWFSC and newletters and current events information will also be available at: www.soilslab.cfr.washington.edu/nwfsc/

Thanks to everyone for your support and assistance and I'll see you at the winter meeting!

Darlene Zabowski

Northwest Forest Soils Council, Summer Tour,

Business Meeting, Kelso, WA. Red Lion Inn. August 2, 2000

Darlene Zabowski, President, Minutes compiled by George Scherer

Darlene asked for topic suggestions for Winter 2001 meeting program. Let her know.

There was previous discussion of rotating the winter meeting from Portland to Seattle to Vancouver, B.C. areas on three year rotations. The result is that Winter 2001 meeting will be held in Bellingham. Peter Homan has agreed to help with arrangements. Darlene asked if all agreed. Show of hands indicated that all agreed.

Darlene announced that beginning about year-end 2000 all NWFSC correspondence will be conducted by email. Members need to submit current email addresses.

Previous discussion proposed the 2001 Summer tour for Alaska. Show of hands indicates about 20 members interested in Alaska tour. Some volunteers are needed to work on tour details. Topics suggested were NSF Boreal Forest Research, Soil Carbon Storage. The time being considered is early to mid July. Bob Edmonds said it would be a good idea to find out what it takes for the Alaska tour to "go"- a minimum number and maximum number for tour.

Dick Miller offered to work with Jim Boyle to design the summer 2002 tour in Oregon.

There are still a few 50th Anniversary NWFSC T-shirts available. Call Darlene. Price is $14 US.

Discussion was reinstated on what the NWFSC should plan for improvements for the book Forest Soils of the Douglas-fir Region published by this group about 1980. Should the style be a Handbook? Or Text? Or Symposium proceedings? Shall the coverage of topics be expanded?

John DePuy said that California Forest Soils council (through Rich Sable) is planning a similar book. We should touch base with them.

Mike Curran suggests that the symposium approach works well, provided manuscripts are accepted and published prior to meetings. He offered to help with B.C. inputs. Mike suggests considering a larger more public audience with appropriate topics and a writing style engaging to the public. He is familiar with some publishers who might be able to assist in the design stages.

Darlene has a list of about 10 folks who have indicated a willingness to work on the book.

Bob Edmonds offered that symposium may be the easiest approach. University resources are available for that mode of development.

Darlene asks: What do the members think about the goals of the book? Technical or Popular? Shall we go for a broad audience?

John DePuy, of an earlier book committee, said the believed the target audience to be Natural Resource managers, Soil Scientists, and land management Professionals. They had not thought about a "general audience".

Phil McColley said it was a good time to get information to the general public- particularly with rapid urbanization of Northwest wildlands.

Craig suggested that a web-site may be more appealing to general public.

Tom Terry suggested inclusion of topics on landslides and erosion, not covered in the first editions.

Dick Miller said that two products might be useful: one for professionals covering, geology, chemistry, nutrition, physical features, and mapping; then another for a more public audience. Something like what extension folks do: information sheets or booklets.

Karl H. " need someone to take the lead here and develop ideas- do it or don’t do it."

Bob E said he remains a bit skeptical since no one person has yet offered to come forth and champion the book project.

Darlene said for members to discuss and think about it over the next day or so. After supper tomorrow interested members will meet to pool thoughts and decide a direction for the book project.

Darlene returned the meeting to Tom Terry for discussion on travel details for tomorrow’s portion of the tour.
