DR. EARL LEWIS STONE, JR.

Dr. Earl Lewis Stone Jr., age 92, passed away July 23, 2007 at home.

Born July 12, 1915 in Hinmansville, New York, Dr. Stone received his B.S. in Forestry from the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University in 1938, his M.S. in Soil Science from University of Wisconsin in 1940 and his Ph.D. in Soil Science from Cornell University in 1948.

Dr. Stone married Dr. Margaret Hodgman June 7, 1941. He married Jean LaChance on January 10, 1998.

He served with the 8th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron, 5th Air Force in the Pacific in WWII.

Charles Lathrop Pack Professorship of Forest Soils, Cornell University 1948 - 1979, Adjunct Professor Forest Soils, University of Florida 1979 - 2002.

He authored more than 140 research publications. He was editor of Forest Science from 1965 to 1972. Also served as editor, associate editor, and member of editorial advisory board for numerous other scientific journals and conference proceedings.

Elected a Fellow of: American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, Society of American Foresters, and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Stone served on several presidential, federal and international committees investigating forestry, environmental and scientific topics, including Bikini Atoll Rehabilitation Committee 1983-2001.

Preceded in death by his wives, Margaret and Jean, his survivors include a brother, John R. Stone of Bainbridge, Georgia; daughter, Dr. Jeanne Fox and husband, Dr. Lloyd Fox of Vassar, Kansas; sons, Dr. Earl Stone III of Arlington, Texas, and Dr. Nathan Stone and wife, Dr. Carole Engle of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and five grandchildren.
