PhD opportunity in Isotope Biogeochemistry at the University of Pittsburgh.
A fully-funded Ph.D. research assistantship is available in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science at the University of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). The Research Assistant will characterize transport and fate of emissions of reactive nitrogen (ammonia and nitrogen oxides) and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) using stable isotope techniques. In addition, the PhD candidate will be responsible for significant field instrumentation, data collection, and laboratory work. Successful applicants will start in Fall 2008 and have experience and interest in stable isotopes, nitrogen biogeochemistry, bio-atmospheric interactions, and/or atmospheric chemistry. Preference will be given to candidates who have already completed her/his MS, although this is not required. Varied disciplinary backgrounds will be considered. The qualified applicant will have strong organizational and writing skills, be highly motivated, creative, self-directed and independent. The candidate will join an active and expanding group in the Department of Geology dedicated to interdisciplinary studies of watershed biogeochemistry, human-environment interactions, and stable isotope tracers. The Department of Geology and Planetary Science at the University of Pittsburgh is a center of excellence in stable isotope geochemistry, with 6 faculty dedicated to applications of stable isotope geochemistry. Please contact Dr. Emily Elliott as soon as possible for more information at eelliott@pitt.edu or 412-624-8882. Please submit applications by February 15, 2008 for full consideration.
